Concerning a possible trip to London:

Mom: What if you get the new job?

Me: That's why I looked at end of August/early September. If I get it, I'll have been there long enough that it will be acceptable for me to take a little vacation. Plus, it gives us time to save up and plan for it. Plus, David Tennant is going to be in Love's Labour's Lost with the Royal Shakespeare Company during that time and we can go see that. Plus, it would be a nice time of the year to be there. See, I'm a thinker.

Mom: You're not a thinker, you're a schemer.

Note: Anybody know how to get the best deal on a vacation package to London? Two adults, about ten days...for a mother-daughter bonding trip...

This is funny... I have the travel bug right now too. Dave and I are planning a trip sometime in a year or so (to save up vacation time for him) to either China (beijing, shanghai) or Eastern Europe (Prague, Budapest). I found some awesome trip planning sites: http://www.homeandabroad.com/bootStrap.ha

Thanks Heather! I will have to check those sites out...and I'm biased, but I think you should go to Prague. :)

Airfare - use kayak.com to find cheapest flights, then go to the airline's individual webpage to find the flights for even cheaper.

I really...just read a London guidebook before I went and made a plan to hit up all the spots I wanted to see. RSC is great, but Stratford-upon-Avon was a little overinflated. However, if you get a chance to see the Globe and a performance there, go.

I'm a big fan of the WWII Cabinet War Room museum - not so much of the British Museum, but the British Museum does have some cool stuff.

Ah heck. Just e-mail me when you want. I'll give you the scoop. :)

Oh, London. I would LOVE to go to London right now.

I'm not generally the girl who dreams of overseas travel... or travel at all. But right at this moment, the thought of a trip to London seems oh so romantic.

And escapist, maybe? :)

I find that you can usually get better deals if you book things individually, because there are some great websites for different things. The ones suggested above are great, and then there are obviously the usual (orbitz, expedia, priceline etc.) that are always worth checking out.

I lived in London for 6 years and would love to answer any little questions you might have, although I haven't been back in a while.

Thank y'all, I'm trying to look around and find the best...it's harder than I thought. I'm not usually the planner for things like this...

Hopefully this trip won't fuel too many more daydreams about moving to London...or it might...whatever...

ooooohhhh london! i love london! it's like my home away from home across the pond.

i have been there twice, the most recent trip in march 2006. i flew british air and had a vegan meal, which i don't think they offer anymore. it was also important to me to fly non-stop. i've flown from phoenix to madrid (once) and london (twice) and it so worth that extra little bit of moula to me for a non-stop. less stress, and less time couped up on planes and/or waiting in lines.

i definitely recommend the british museum, it has a great collection. one aussie traveler i know who went to egypt said his trip there was slightly disappointing because all of the egyptian art had been shipped out of the country; the british museum is known to have one of the best collections. plus, it is free (with donations). can't beat that! i also love the tate gallery (the british art not the modern art). (also free)

if you want to see what kinds of things you'd find there, check out my photo gallery. in fact, i took like 800 photos in london (and warwick) for the week i was there, but only posted a small portion of those.

i also recommend the london double decker bus tour. it sounds cheesy, but it is a lot of fun and in just a couple of hours you get an educated tour of the city, an idea where everything is, and an idea of what else/what areas you want to see more...in addition to what you have already planned.

traveling the tube is awesome...speaking as someone that does not currently have mass public transit at her fingertips. it'll get you anywhere you need to go.

a day trip to warwick castle is a great idea too. i've been there twice, once when snowy/misty, and once when sunny/bright and it is beautiful both ways. every castle in england has a small bit of a touristy schlock-feel. warwick has creepy wax figures and a big shop, but if you can ignore those, it is gorgeous.

OH! and check out happycow.net for the restaurants that are veg-friendly. i printed out a list and took it with me. it is great for needing a place to eat in a pinch in different areas. there is nothing worse than traveling in another country and not knowing where you can grab something vegan and good and fast. london was pretty easy, but madrid was much harder. when i was there last i was lacto-ovo, not vegan, so i am not sure how many vegan options they have currently, but pret-a-manger does a great job of offering fresh, healthy vegetarian foods fast. and there are prets everywhere!

if you have any questions just let me know. have fun planning!

i am majorly jealous! i am totally jonesing for my own "next-big-trip"! :)

Oh how fun! I've always wanted to go to London. I would suggest VirginAir or British Airways for deals. My cousin has been there multiple times and loves it.
